I was wondering how you guys go about gaining a mutual respect with your children; whether adopted or not. I see many parent's struggling with keeping their children in line and getting them to listen.
I think the problem lies in the parents. Many people simply are suited for parenthood and don't know what they're doing. With the proper information (whether you get it from experienced parents or from books or the internet), you can accomplish anything. I believe raising a child is one of the toughest things anyone can do but when done with care and the child's best interests at heart will work out. Starting young and explaining to children why things are wrong and so forth sets a great stage for their future. Children aim to please and thrive when they are rewarded. They love to learn, so teaching them things isn't as hard as it may seem. Patience is key! :)
From a very young age, it's important to let children know not only that you love them and that they can trust you but that they need to listen to you. I'm not saying it's easy but they really do well with it if you keep consistent. Working with your partner or anyone else who may babysit them and making sure rules are consistent is a great place to start.
Being consistent is one of the most important things when it comes to children. They need to know the rules and know that there will be punishments when these rules aren't followed.
Honestly, all you can really do is take one day at a time and see what works for your child. Everyone is different and there are various routes you can take. I find books to be extremely helpful.
