Selecting a Bedtime

I know a lot of people who have children and the times they put their children to bed vary dramatically. Some people put their children to bed at about 7 at night, others as late as 10. What do you think is a good time for a child to go to bed?

Keep in mind, I don't have any children at this time so this may not be the answer someone with children would give. The first number that comes to mind is 8. I think that's a good bedtime because it's not too early, not too late so they can wake up at a decent hour and not be tired. I'm also thinking in terms of school. If they have to get up at about 6 let's say; you don't want them to be too tired.
I'm sure it varies based on what time their school is and all of that though.

I always thought 9 was a good time but I know a lot of kids start to get grumpy because they're tired so I would base it off their mood.

I have always selected 8pm

I have always selected 8pm as a time to start winding down. This gives you and your child some time to prepare for bed. During this time you can clean up their play areas, make sure they brush their teeth and read them a book.

This is something I probably won't think about until I have a child and I can figure out what kind of schedule fits us best. If we wake up early, then I would want them to go to bed earlier to make sure they get enough sleep. If (for whatever reason) we are the type of family that sleeps in, then I'll build their bedtime around that. No matter what happens, I want to make sure to be consistent. That's my main goal in parenthood.
